Zirconium is an active metal with an affinity for oxygen. When the zirconium is in the oxidizing medium, the protective oxide film with good adhesion will form spontaneously on the surface. The oxide film has a self-healing ability in the presence of oxygen and can protect the zirconium matrix from corrosion damage at 300 ° C. It is therefore a corrosion-resistant metal. Its chemical stability is better than that of base alloy and superior to that of high-grade stainless steel, titanium, and its alloy. Zirconium is particularly outstanding because one of the advantages of anti-reducing acid corrosion, that is,  sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and other acids has very good corrosion resistance, which is just the lack of titanium in the corrosion resistance. Zirconium is corrosion resistant in most inorganic acids, organic acids, alkali solutions, salt solutions, and some molten salts. But in a few media, such as ferric chloride, copper chloride, aqua regia, concentrated sulfuric acid, wet chlorine gas, etc. is no corrosion resistance. It is also corrosion resistant to high temperature and high-pressure water, steam, and liquid metals. 1. The corrosion rate was less than 0.025 mm/a in all boiling hydrochloric acid concentrations. 2. Zirconium has excellent corrosion resistance in sulfuric acid at a concentration of not more than 70%. In addition, zirconium acts in a sulfuric acid environment because stainless steel and nickel alloy can not be used at high temperatures, 20% sulfuric acid and 40 -60% sulfuric acid below boiling temperature.

Zirconium alloys have good corrosion resistance, moderate mechanical properties, low atomic thermal neutron absorption cross-section, and good compatibility with nuclear fuel in high temperature and high-pressure water and steam at 300-400°C. Therefore, they can be used as core structural materials for water-cooled nuclear reactors.

Zirconium has an important use for nuclear energy, but pure zirconium cannot meet the requirements of nuclear fuel cladding and pressure tubes in terms of its strength and corrosion resistance.
